- Mariah Carey (ā€œIt’s Like Thatā€)

ā€˜Cause it’s my night
No stress, no fights
I’m leavin’ it all behind
No tears, no time to cry
Just making the most of life.

The music video is easily one of the best I’ve ever seen. It captures the exact vibe of the track: effortlessly cool and sexy, drenched in city light. Everything from the styling, to the lighting, to the camera work feels in sync with the song’s perfect atmosphere. She brilliantly captures the feeling of getting ready for a night out. Oh to go out dancing with Kelela…

ā€œContactā€ is the spark for the playlist I’ve curated: a collection of songs that echo its energy of release and surrendering to the moment. Some tracks are in direct conversation with that message (e.g. ā€œRelease Some Tensionā€ by SWV, ā€œNo Stressā€ by Wizkid); others match the vibe. Each one holds the magical ability to make my stress melt away, even just for a few minutes. They remind me to breathe, to move, and to be present.

Kelela’s ā€œContactā€ feels like cruising through a futuristic city at night; like dancing at the club at 2am, everyone losing themselves in the music; the kind of track that makes me feel like I’m both watching a movie and starring in it. It’s completely transportive. The lyric ā€œyou’re stressing, that’s not allowedā€ unlocks a feeling of freedom and release in me. It’s a gentle command, but it lands with so much power. And so I just had to make a playlist to match that vibe.

The production by LSDXOXO, Bambii, Asmara, and Brandon Peralta is sublime. The track opens with glistening, liquid synths that create a hypnotic pulse, and the drums are precise and fluid, giving it a heartbeat and anchoring the track. Every sound feels intentional, like it’s designed to pull you deeper into this neon-lit world Kelela is building.
